TENS OF THOUSANDS AT BLESSING OF THE PRIESTS AT THE KOTEL

Thousands of Kohanim, Jewish men descended from members of the priestly class in the
People of Israel, gathered at the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem on Thursday morning
for the traditional Birkat HaKohanim.

Holiday festivities also are being held in Hevron, where the Jewish community is offering
activities for children and live Chassidic vocal entertainment.

The Kotel ceremony featured some two thousand Kohanim who blessed all those present with
three verses from the Torah (Numbers 6:23-27) that were recited by Jewish priests in the
First and Second Holy Temples.

The Western Wall plaza was packed with some 50,000 Jewish worshippers who streamed into
Jerusalem from all over the country and around the world especially for the event.

During the recitation of the blessing, the Kohanim gathered into groups spread their
prayer shawls over their own heads, spreading out their arms over the congregation to
form a small enclosure that prevented congregants from seeing them during the actual
blessing. There is a custom for the congregants who are being blessed to avoid looking at
the Kohanim during the blessing as well.

Kohanim have the tradition of being direct descendants of the first High Priest of the
Jewish People, Aharon (Aaron), the brother of Moshe (Moses), and as such have a separate
status in Judaism. All Kohenim are members of the Tribe of Levi by direct patrilineal
descent, although not all members of that tribe are Kohanim. The Levites who were not
Kohenim served as Temple assistants and provided the music and songs to accompany
ceremonies, among other tasks.

Following the ceremony, Israel's Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger recited a prayer he
composed especially for the occation, asking G-d to "rescue" Jonathon Pollard,
imprisoned in America for more than 20 years on a single count of espionage for handing
classified information to Israel, an allied nation, and kidnapped IDF St. Sgt. Gilad
Shalit, held captive by Hamas terrorists in Gaza since June 25, 2006.

Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar followed with a supplication of his own composition as
well, asking G-d to take away distress from the People of Israel, to end the numerous
tragic motor vehicle accidents that have destroyed so many lives in the country over the
past year and the sicknesses that have affected so many people, and finally to decimate
Israel's enemies.

To both blessings, some 50,000 voices answered with a resounding, "Amen!"
according to an eyewitness, who added that security officers were discreet but clearly
present. "It wasn't an overwhelming presence, you didn't get the feeling they were
imposing themselves on you, but you did see them everywhere," he said. "I saw
one soldier up on a roof with binoculars."

THOUSANDS GATHER FOR TEMPLE CONGREGATION CEREMONY

The Temple Institute in Jerusalem's Old City succeeded on Wednesday in arousing a spirit
of longing for the Holy Temple amongst a crowd of thousands that gathered for a
re-enactment of the Hakhel ceremony.

Of the two once-every-seven-years Biblical commandments - Shemittah and Hakhel - the
first lasts for a whole year, while Hakhel takes only an hour or two, but packs a great
burst of inspiration into that short period. Binding only when the Holy Temple is
standing, it involves a public Torah reading by the King of Israel for the entire nation
- men, women, and children - for the purpose of rousing all to stand in awe of G-d and
follow the Torah's statutes.
The word Hakhel (pronounced Hock-hel) literally means, in fact, "Gather the people
together" (Deut. 31, 10-12).
The Temple Institute held a smaller-scale re-enactment of the event in an Old City park
on Wednesday, the first day of the Intermediate Days of the Sukkot holiday following the
Shemittah year. Though only 500 people had been expected, several times that amount
arrived. The event began with a procession of Kohanim, wearing priestly garments of the
type used in the Temple and sounding of silver trumpets of the type sounded in the
Temple, making their way through Old City streets until their arrival at the central
stage.
Following the afternoon Mincha prayer, Rabbi Yehuda Glick of the Temple Institute
introduced the rabbi-priests who were to read from the Torah. Among them were Rabbi
Shlomo Riskin of Efrat, Rabbi Menachem Cohen of Jerusalem's Nachlaot neighborhood, and
Rav Avi Kahane, as well as Rabbi Azariah Ariel - the head of the Temple Institute's
kollel - and Yeshivat Shilo head Rav Araleh Harel.
The passages read aloud included Deut. 1 ("Behold, I have given you this Land; come
and inherit this Land promised to your forefathers to give their descendants"),
Deut. 11 (about the rewards for fulfilling the Torah and the negative consequences of not
doing so), and others.
New Temple Vessel Serves 12 Priests at Once
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of the just-completed Kiyor HaNechoshet, the
water source to be used for washing by the Priests several times a day. Built to
replicate the Kiyor used in the Holy Temple, it is about nine feet high, weighs two tons,
and is made mostly of copper. It comes complete with a computerized system that enables
heated water to be used on weekdays, and non-heated water on Sabbaths and festivals, when
heating the water is not permitted. Twelve priests can wash their hands and feet at
once; each one presses one of two buttons to indicate whether he wants a large amount of
water, such as after completing preparing an animal offering, or a small amount to merely
purify his hands and feet.
The kiyor was built by Moshe Buchbut, a budding Torah scholar and a member of the family
that owns Buchbut Metal Industries in the city of Akko (Acre). He repeated his
explanations countless times to the many excited vistitors who asked how he built it and
how it works. The Buchbut's decided to build the kiyor during the Second Lebanon War.
"From the moment we made the decision," a family spokesman said, "we have
been blessed, both in terms of Katyushas that seemed to stop hitting us during the war,
and financially."
The actual faucets are expected to be installed in the coming weeks. The kiyor is now
standing in a plaza in the Jewish Quarter, and is expected to be placed inside a
protective glass container, as is the Temple Institute's Menorah. It had been hoped that
the kiyor would be placed in the Western Wall Plaza, but this will apparently not occur
in the near future.
A short film describing the Simchat Beit HaShoevah water pouring festival [N.B. REMEMBER THE COMMENTS BY JESUS AT THIS FESTIVAL! D.G.]- a mainstay of
the Sukkot ceremonies in the Holy Temple - was also screened. The film was prepared, as
were the Temple vessels and clothing, by the Temple Institute.

Rabbi Glick explained that though the vessels were prepared in fulfillment of the
Biblical commandment to fashion them - "we even recited the blessing 'He Who has
sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to fashion the tzitz [Priestly
headplate],' for instance" - the vessels have not been consecrated to the Holy
Temple and may therefore be used for other purposes, such as education.

MASS MARCH IN JERUSALEM, HOLY TEMPLE LAVER TO BE UNVEILED

Despite the intermittently heavy rains, close to 10,000 people have showed up for the
traditional Sukkot holiday march in Jerusalem.
They set out from two different points outside the capital - the Kastel near Mevaseret
Zion, and the Sataf brook not far from Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital - as well as from the
Armon HaNetziv neighborhood in southern Jerusalem. All three spears will meet in Sacher
Park near the Knesset, from where they will set out in the afternoon towards Liberty Bell
Park.
Very many downtown roads have been or will be closed in the city, adding pressure to the
expected traditional holiday traffic jams. The list of closed streets reads like a Who's
Who of Jewish history and culture, and includes Rabbi Akiva, Jabotinsky, Ramban
(Nachmanides), Hillel, Shammai, Nathan Strauss, Ben-Yehuda, Ben-Tzvi, Betzalel, Shmuel
HaNagid, Eliezer Mapu, Mendeleh Mocher Seforim, HaMatmid, Histadrut, Kakal (Jewish
National Fund), Gaza, Shalom Aleichem, Achad HaAm, Keren HaYesod, HaAri, Saadiah Gaon,
Benjamin MiTudela, and more.
Among the marchers are or will be some 3,000 tourists from abroad who have arrived to
show solidarity with Israel. Labor unions will also take part, including from Israel
Aircraft Industries, government offices, banks, Israel Electric Company, the Postal
Authority, and more.
A relatively new arrangement is being instituted in Jerusalem, whereby motorists can park
their cars for the day and receive bus tickets for travel around the city for only 15
shekels. The parking lots are located at or near the Supreme Court and downtown Safra
Square. Free parking and bus rides begin at the Teddy Stadium and Ammunition Hill parking
lots.
Thousands more people are expected to descend on the capital for the various holiday
activities, including the Hak'hel reenactment in the Old City at 4:30 PM.  The event is
sponsored by the Temple Institute and the Jewish Quarter Reconstruction and Development
Company. It will feature public Torah readings by leading rabbis, the sounding of Holy
Temple-type silver trumpets, a short film describing the Sukkkot water pouring festival,
and the unveiling of the just-completed Kiyor HaNechoshet (brass laver), which the Temple
Institute hopes will be used in the Holy Temple when it is rebuilt.

Hundreds Visit Temple Mount
An unprecedented 400 people were allowed onto the Temple Mount this morning, though only
in separate groups, and the police allowed them - for the first time in memory - to read
Biblical verses aloud. Another group is scheduled to visit Judaism's holiest site for
12:30 PM. All the visitors followed the precautions prescribed by those rabbis who allow
ascent to the Temple Mount, including immersing in a mikveh (ritual bath), prior to and
during their visit.

Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute explained the significance of the unveiling
of the laver at this point in time: "The kiyor is the first thing used by the
Priests in the Temple every morning, when they sanctify their hands and feet before
beginning their daily service. Essentially, they are washing their hands of the
misconceptions of G-d and of life that they had yesterday, and are beginning the new day
with a new slate. The laver is thus all about looking forward. We ourselves must do the
same thing; in this generation, we have to cleanse ourselves of mistaken conceptions
regarding the Temple, such as that we need to stand by passively as it is brought down
from Heaven. We must be proactive, constantly working, praying and thinking towards the
rebuilding of the Temple and its restoration to its proper place as the central pillar of
Jewish society."

Since we are celebrating the last Holy Day of the Sacred Calendar, there is no Parsha this week. Instead, we read the following, where Yeshua (Gk. Jesus) celebrates Sukkot for the last time:

Joh 7:1 After this, Yeshua traveled around in the Galil, intentionally avoiding Y'hudah because the Judeans were out to kill him.

Joh 7:2 But the festival of Sukkot in Y'hudah was near;

Joh 7:3 so his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go into Y'hudah, so that your talmidim can see the miracles you do;

Joh 7:4 for no one who wants to become known acts in secret. If you're doing these things, show yourself to the world!"

Joh 7:5 (His brothers spoke this way because they had not put their trust in him.)

Joh 7:6 Yeshua said to them, "My time has not yet come; but for you, any time is right.

Joh 7:7 The world can't hate you, but it does hate me, because I keep telling it how wicked its ways are.

Joh 7:8 You, go on up to the festival; as for me, I am not going up to this festival now, because the right time for me has not yet come."

Joh 7:9 Having said this, he stayed on in the Galil.

Joh 7:12 And among the crowds there was much whispering about him. Some said, "He's a good man"; but others said, "No, he is deceiving the masses."

Joh 7:13 However, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Judeans.

Joh 7:14 Not until the festival was half over did Yeshua go up to the Temple courts and begin to teach.

Joh 7:15 The Judeans were surprised: "How does this man know so much without having studied?" they asked.

Joh 7:16 So Yeshua gave them an answer: "My teaching is not my own, it comes from the One who sent me.

Joh 7:17 If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether my teaching is from God or I speak on my own.

Joh 7:18 A person who speaks on his own is trying to win praise for himself; but a person who tries to win praise for the one who sent him is honest, there is nothing false about him.

Joh 7:19 Didn't Moshe give you the Torah? Yet not one of you obeys the Torah! Why are you out to kill me?"

Joh 7:20 "You have a demon!" the crowd answered. "Who's out to kill you?"

Joh 7:21 Yeshua answered them, "I did one thing; and because of this, all of you are amazed.

Joh 7:22 Moshe gave you b'rit-milah — not that it came from Moshe but from the Patriarchs — and you do a boy's b'rit-milah on Shabbat.

Joh 7:23 If a boy is circumcised on Shabbat so that the Torah of Moshe will not be broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man's whole body well on Shabbat?

Joh 7:24 Stop judging by surface appearances, and judge the right way!"

Joh 7:25 Some of the Yerushalayim people said, "Isn't this the man they're out to kill?

Joh 7:26 Yet here he is, speaking openly; and they don't say anything to him. It couldn't be, could it, that the authorities have actually concluded he's the Messiah?

Joh 7:27 Surely not — we know where this man comes from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from."

Joh 7:28 Whereupon Yeshua, continuing to teach in the Temple courts, cried out, "Indeed you do know me! And you know where I'm from! And I have not come on my own! The One who sent me is real. But him you don't know!

Joh 7:37 Now on the last day of the festival, Hoshana Rabbah, Yeshua stood and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him keep coming to me and drinking!

Joh 7:46 The guards replied, "No one ever spoke the way this man speaks!"

Joh 7:47 "You mean you've been taken in as well?" the P'rushim retorted.

Joh 7:48 "Has any of the authorities trusted him? Or any of the P'rushim? No!

Joh 7:49 True, these `am-ha'aretz do, but they know nothing about the Torah, they are under a curse!"

Joh 7:50 Nakdimon, the man who had gone to Yeshua before and was one of them, said to them,

Joh 7:51 "Our Torah doesn't condemn a man — does it? — until after hearing from him and finding out what he's doing."

Joh 7:52 They replied, "You aren't from the Galil too, are you? Study the Tanakh, and see for yourself that no prophet comes from the Galil!"

Joh 7:53 [Most scholars believe that 7:53 - 8:11 is not from the pen of Yochanan. Many are of the opinion that it is a true story about Yeshua written by another of his talmidim.] Then they all left, each one to his own home.
