I hope the following answers your question:
About the baptism of/to/in and by the Holy Spirit:
I have concluded that this is something that Yeshua (Jesus) introduced to us in a new way.
He promised the Holy Spirit, He gave the Holy Spirit to His own disciples. While He was with them no one needed help to believe in Him. He was right there in front of them.
After He left, Yeshua said the Holy Spirit would come. He (The Holy Spirit) would convince the heart of men of what the mind could not perceive, since they could not see Him any longer.
Rav Shaul (Paul the Apostle) had a specific revelation and saw Yeshua "as a person who was born outside of time." Viz. a time when Jesus was no longer on earth.
The Holy Spirit was given three specific messages:
a you will believe what sin is [that you cannot believe]
b righteousness [only one is good, only one stands right or righteous before G-d, that is Yeshua alone!
c judgment - the only hing to look foward to for those who cannot, will not, believe
Have you "received" the Holy Spirit since you began to believe, asked Paul.
Those who had not nor could not meet Yeshua said "no, we haven't heard about the Holy Spirit." We believed He was coming but we never met him, they said. They were baptized in water as a testimony that they believed what they had heard, which was that Yeshua would come and die to take away their sins.
When they were 'baptized in the Holy Spirit' then the Holy Spirit introduced them to Yeshua (who was gone by this time).
If you have not been baptized by the Holy Spirit then you only know Jesus as a story, not personally; even the devil knows Jesus personally. You will know Him personally when you are introduced to Him by the Holy Spirit.
Have you believed in the Holy Spirit? You have to believe, when you believe, then you are baptized. And you receive power: you can be His witness (Greek=martyr). Ask and you will receive; knock and it will be opened; seek and you will find, Messiah taught us.
So, to answer your question, yes, you need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to know Him. Otherwise, you're just pretending, doing it on your own power, not His.
